Definition of the Day:

Herpes, genital: Genital herpes is caused by the Herpes Simplex 2 virus, HSV-2. Symptoms appear within three days to two weeks after initial contact with an infected sexual partner. Small blisters usually occur, and women often complain of urinary discomfort. Lymph node enlargement in the groin area can also be seen.

Recurrent herpes comes after an initial infection and can break out several times a year. Some people have far more eruptions, up to ten or twelve times per year.

There is no cure for genital herpes. Treatment options include Acyclovir or Valacyclovir. Genital herpes is a risk factor for HIV, since it produces open sores through which the AIDS virus is more readily transmitted.
